    Supersport United through, defeat Stars

SuperSport United are through to the semi-finals of the R8-million MTN8 as they beat Free State Stars2-1 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium with goals

    Supersport United vs Moroka Swallows

by Nathan Paulse and Franklin Cale.

Both teams were sporting their new arrivals, with Paulse, Bevan Fransman, Roscoe Pietersen, Lucas Thwala and George Maluleka turning out for SuperSport United, while Taonga Dondo, Luyanda Hlongwa and Daniel Cordosa made their debuts with Free State Stars.

The new lads made their impact when Maluleka supplied a great ball into the box just before the half hour mark, which found Paulse. His header put Gavin Hunt’s men in the lead.

Soon after, Stars coach Steve Komphela was given his marching orders by the referee Daniel Bennett when he had too much to say about the tackles on his players.

SuperSport went further ahead when Franklin Cale drove in from a set piece, missing everybody and sneaking in at the far post.

Free State Stars finally managed to pull a goal back through the impressive Katlego Mashaba in the 63rd minute, when he latched onto a poor piece of defending by Pietersen, to chip it into the back of the net.

SuperSport United ended the game 2-1 winners to eliminate Free State Stars from the MTN8.

    PSL fixtures out this week

The waiting will soon be over. The Premier Soccer League intends to release the fixtures for the 2012/2013 season this week according to PSL general manager Derek Blackensee.

The release of the fixtures has been slightly delayed as some clubs have not yet notified the PSL which stadiums they will use.

This season kicks off with the MTN8 quarter finals on the weekend of 4/5 August, so it is only two weeks until the fans start seeing some real action on the local scene. The season will take a break during mid-December to allow Bafana Bafana players some preparation time for the African Nations Cup, taking place in South Africa in January.

The league will resume in mid-February.

    Durban loves Man United

Tickets for the big game on Wednesday and the training session have all been sold.

Some 51 000 fans are expected to watch local side Amazulu take on the mighty English Premiership giants, Manchester United. Kick off will be at 8pm in the Moses Mabhida Stadium and fans of both sides are expected.

The English side has brought with crowd pleasers like the experienced captain Rio Ferdinand, midfielder Michael Carrick, midfielder Paul Scholes and striker Dimitar Berbatov, as well as some younger talent including strikers Federico Macheda and Javier Hernandez.

The match will be played in pretty cold weather and those lucky enough to attend should dress warmly. The weather will be of no concern to the Amazulu players however, some of whom hope to catch the eye of talent seekers for Man United. The opportunity to be signed by a top side like Man United will be additional motivation for players, who will be giving their very best effort to sneak a memorable win.

    Amazulu for top four finish

The coach of Amazulu insists that talk in the camp is about securing a top eight finish, despite reports to the contrary.

Last week, the general manager of Amazulu, Peter O’Connor, that the target for the 2012/2013 season was to finish in the top four. He maintained that the pressure was on the Swedish manager Roger Palmgren to deliver.

Palmgren was quick to point out that nothing in his contract imposes a top four season finish and he insists that they are required to maintain or improve on last season’s result.

Amazulu face Manchester United at the Moses Mabhida stadium on Wednesday. This game will form the start of the celebrations of the local club’s 80th anniversary.

Their first MTN8 cup opening game is against Moroka Swallows in early August and despite the Swedish coach pointing to a top eight finish in the premiership, many expect more of the team that has just signed the Liberian international midfielder, Dulee Johnson.
