    Bafana slip in Fifa rankings

South Africa slipped two positions to 76th in the latest Fifa rankings.

Bafana Bafana lost 1-0 against Brazil in Sao Paulo last month, losing for the first time in seven official matches this year.

Four days later they beat neighbours Mozambique 2-0 in Nelspruit.

Bafana will play friendly internationals against Poland in Warsaw on October 12 and Kenya in Nairobi on October 16 2013 in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The South African side will have to make do without Steven Pienaar, who announced his retirement from international football yesterday.

The Bafana squad for the matches in October:

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs), Wayne Sandilands (Mamelodi Sundowns), Moeneeb Josephs (Orlando Pirates)

Defenders: Thabo Nthethe (Bloemfontein Celtic), Luvhengo Mungomeni (Moroka Swallows), Punch Masenamela (Mamelodi Sundowns), Ricardo Nunes (MSK Zilina, Slovakia), Bongani Khumalo (PAOK, Greece) – captain, Siyabonga Sangweni (Orlando Pirates), Erick Mathoho (Kaizer Chiefs), Bevan Fransman (SuperSport United)

Midfielders: Teko Modise (Mamelodi Sundowns), Lerato Chabangu (Moroka Swallows), Siphiwe Tshabalala (Kaizer Chiefs), Reneilwe Letsholonyane (Kaizer Chiefs), Delron Buckley (Maritzburg United), May Mahlangu (Helsingborg IF, Sweden), Dean Furman (Oldham Athletic, England), Oupa Manyisa (Orlando Pirates), Kagisho Dikgacoi (Crystal Palace, England), Sifiso Myeni (Orlando Pirates), Katlego Mashego (Free State Stars), George Lebese (Kaizer Chiefs)

Banyana in high spirits before Games

The South African national women’s soccer side, affectionately known as Banyana Banyana, will be feeling positive after their tour. The side defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 last Thursday before earning some tough experience in a 3-1 loss to Olympic hosts Great Britain on Sunday.

Coach Joseph Mkhonza says the side will brush up on the lessons learned so far on tour. It is clear that their fighting spirit will be pivotal in the games which start in a week.

Banyana’s opening match is against Sweden on 25 July and the other sides in Group F are Canada and Japan.
